Biography
I am currently a Professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester. My main research activity has neen the optical properties of semiconductors. This interset began during my time as RA for Dr. B.C. Cavenett in the Physics Department at the University of Hull using the technique of Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance. In 1980 I joined Phillips Research Laboratories at Redhill as a Senior Scientist to work on the physics and optical characterisation of III-V compunds. During the period 1984 - 85 I was seconded to AT anT Bell laboratories at Murray Hill in the USA. On returning from the USA he was promoted to the position of Principal Scientist and given the respononsibilty of leading the project area concerned with study of the optical properties of low dimensional structures.
In 1991 I left Philips to take up a position as Senior Lecturer in the Physics Department at UMIST. There I continued my work with semiconductors and in particular quantum dots and nitride based materials. Most recently I have been heavily involved in the nitride materials in a joint program with Prof C J Humphries at the University of Cambridge. In 2002 I had I worked as a visiting scientist at the PTB in Braunschweig in Germany. In 2003 I joined the new School of Physics and Asttronomy in the newly created University of Manchester
