Weatherhead School of Management

Philip A. Cola, PhD, is a research manager and practitioner scholar with over 25 years experience in the fiscal, legal, scientific and ethical reviews of research. He was Vice President for Research and Technology Management at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center for 21 years where he oversaw the Institutional Review Board, clinical research compliance, grants administration, research finance and clinical research education and training.

Currently, he holds appointments as an Associate Professor of Management and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. He teaches qualitative and quantitative research methods, leadership and research dissemination. Presently, he is also the Associate Director of Academic Affairs for the Doctor of Management Programs at Weatherhead as well as the Director of the Regulatory Knowledge and Support core of the CWRU Clinical Translational Science Award.

Cola holds a PhD in management from the Weatherhead School of Management and a Master’s Degree in experimental psychology and research method and design from Cleveland State University. His research interests include the responsible conduct of research, factors influencing success of physician scientists in academic medical centers, the translational science paradigm, workforce development, physician identity and nonprofit organizations.

Cola has given numerous presentations and lectures locally and nationally on the responsible conduct of research, human subjects protections, grants administration and workforce development in the translational sciences including sessions at the National Academy of Sciences and the National Institutes of Health. He has authored numerous impactful publications in the areas of psychology, psychiatry and research management. He has been a member of the Society for Research Administration (SRA) for 20 years. In 2009, he received the Excellence Award from SRA and in 2011, he was designated SRA Distinguished Faculty.

Additionally, he is member of the Academy of Management (AOM) and the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA), both since 2012. He has presented his research on the physician scientist workforce in academic medical centers consistently in these venues. In 2017, he received the Doctoral Teaching Excellence Award from the Weatherhead School of Management.
