Petros Nihoyannopoulos qualified from medical school in Universite Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France in 1979. He trained in Cardiology at Hammersmith Hospital between 1984 and 1988, becoming Lecturer in Cardiology in 1988 and subsequently Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist in 1991. In 2006 he became Professor of Cardiology at Imperial College London and Hammersmith Hospital.

Professor Nihoyannopoulos is clinical Firm leader for treating patients with a range of heart disease as well as leading a research team in a variety of research programs.

Professor Nihoyannopoulos' particular area or research is in the study of ventricular function using ultrasound, a field in which he was one of the pioneers of stress echocardiography in the UK in the early 80s, as well as leading the development of contrast microbubbles in clinical practice.

He currently holds a number of research grants for the study of heart muscle disease with Tissue Doppler and the use of contrast microbubbles for detecting myocardial perfusion and inflammation. He is devoted to teaching both, under-graduate and post-graduate medical students and is an invited lecturer and visiting Professor in several universities around the world.

He has published more that 300 full papers in peer review journals, more than 400 abstracts, more than 20 book chapters and two books on non-invasive imaging of myocardial ischaemia and Echocardiography. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, Royal College of Physicians, European Society of Cardiology. He served as President of the British Society of Echocardiography between 2001 and 2003 and as President of the European Association of Echocardiography of the European Society of Cardiology (2006-08). He has also held several positions in the European Society of Cardiology over the years and remains an active Fellow of the Society.
