Biography

My undergraduate degree was in History at University College London; I wrote a DPhil entitled ''Civic Obligation and Individual Liberty in Ancient Athens'' at Wadham College, Oxford. For two years before coming to Manchester I was Walsh Family Lecturer in Ancient History at Trinity College, University of Dublin.

I am a supporter of the teaching of ancient history at all levels and am currently Chair of the Classical Association Teaching Board; I organise regular INSET days for teachers of Ancient History and Classical Civilisation in schools and colleges.

I have published on Athenian politics and political history, Greek epigraphical habits, Greek historiography, and the reception of ancient Greece in modern historiography. I am currently engaged in two separate book-length projects on fourth-century Athenian decrees in the literary record and on the deployment of inscriptions in ancient Greek literary texts. Recently-published articles include a study of George Grote''s use of analogy in his _History of Greece, _a study of the early modern study of Greek epigraphy, an exploration of the reception of the Parian Marble, an analysis of fourth-century Athenian perceptions of honorific decrees and assessments of the use of inscriptions by Aeneas Tacticus and Diodorus Siculus. Forthcoming articles include a study of the modern history of Greek epigraphy, and an assessment of the epigraphical culture of Hellenistic Erythrai.

I am happy to supervise doctoral projects in any of my areas of research interest.
