Mendoza College of Business

Mr. Murphy has 45 years of experience in the development, operation, and asset management of commercial real estate. He began his career in 1971 as a commercial real estate broker working in a family-owned business specializing in office leasing. During the mid-1970''s he became a partner with Syracuse, New York-based Pioneer De11elopment Company. He became the partner in charge of office leasing and development, and he served on the company''s Executive Committee.

Since 1998, Mr. Murphy has been a principal with Pioneer''s Denver affiliate, Continuum Partners. He is currently responsible for executive oversight of designated projects, is the Director of Office Leasing and Development, and is a member of the company''s Executive Committee participating in all critical development, operational, financing and disposition strategies. Over his development career Mr. Murphy has been involved at an executive level with projects having a value of approximately $2 billion, and which consist of virtually every co11mercial real estate product type.

Mr. Murphy is a long-time member of NAIOP, and he was awarded the President''s Award from the Central New York Chapter given for oLtstanding community service and business integrity. He was a Board Member of the Colorado Chapter for six years and served as President of the 680-member Colorado Chapter in 2006. Mr. Murphy also served four years as a Board Member with the Business Improvement District of the Downtown Denver Partnership and was Chairman of the Business Improvement District Board in 2004.

Mr. Murphy has participated in, written reports, and testified as an expert witness in multi-million dollar real estate lawsuits, and his participation was critical to the successful outcomes achieved in each case. .

Mr. Murphy served as a board member at Regis Jesuit High School in Denver and is a lifetime member of the Board of Trustees of Christian Brothers Aca demy in Syracuse, NY. He was also a long time board member of the Make A Wish Foundation of Central New York and was named Man of the Year during his board  tenure.

Mr. Murphy was involved with a group of four who participated with Professor David Hutchinson in helping format the real estate courses to be offered at Notre Dame. In 2015 Mr. Murphy taught the Real Estate Development Course at the Mendoza School of Business at Notre Dame.

Mr. Murphy was awarded an Honorary Monogram from the University of Notre Dame in 2005, and was appointed by the President and Athletic Director to the recently formed Student Athlete Advisory Council. He has also been a frequent guest speaker in the Business Schools at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Colora do Bou der and the University of Denver in their gra duate and undergraduate real estate programs.

Mr. Murphy has a B.S. in Business Administration from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY, and he is married with six children.  Mr. Murphy resides in Denver, Colorado and also maintains a home in South Bend, IN.

Assistant Professor Daniel Murphy joined the Global Economies and Markets area in the Summer of 2013 after receiving his Ph.D. in Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. Daniel's work focuses on the nature of consumer demand and its implications for market outcomes. His research addresses issues in international and macroeconomics, including the determinants of cross-country price differences, the causes of fluctuations in the price of crude oil and the consequences of asymmetric economic growth.

Prior to joining Darden, Daniel was a National Hunger Fellow and a research associate at the Urban Institute.

Daniel P. Murphy is a professor of accounting and specializes in federal taxation. He served as Department Head from 2003 to 2012. He joined the faculty in 1990 after completing his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Murphy is a Certified Public Accountant and previously worked with two international accounting firms. His research focuses on the effect of taxes on investment behavior, global tax planning and public policy. His research has been published in The Journal of the American Taxation Association, The Journal of Taxation, Advances in Taxation and numerous other journals. He has been awarded a PriceWaterhouse Coopers Research Fellowship, a grant from the KPMG Peat Marwick Foundation and was named co-recipient of the Outstanding Author Award by the Journal of Financial Services Professionals

Murphy''s teaches international taxation, principles of taxation, and financial statement analysis in the MBA program.  Murphy has won numerous awards for teaching excellence including the Pugh & Company Accounting Faculty Excellence Award, The Beta Alpha Psi Excellence Award, and the John Moore Award.

Murphy is very involved in professional and community service. He served as Vice-President and member of the Board of Directors for the American Taxation Association and served as President and Board Chair of the American Accounting Association’s Accounting Programs Leadership Group.  Murphy has served two, four-year terms, including two years as Board Chair, on the Knox County Board of Education, was a co-founder and Board Chair of the Great Schools Partnership, and currently serves as Board Chair of the Knoxville Community Development Corporation.
