Biography
Heinz College
Before moving into academics, she spent over 20 years in the IT industry. She brings a unique combination of industry, teaching, and research reflecting academic as well as practitioner perspectives. She is a PhD (2017) in Information Science and Technology from Penn State University, and has two Master degrees from Heinz School, Carnegie Mellon University in Information Technologies (MSIT, 2010) and BITS Pilani, India in Computer Science (M.Tech. 1992). Her undergraduate education was also in Computer Science from Institution of Engineering & Technology, Lucknow, India (B.Tech. 1989).
Teaching
Neelam has taught courses ranging from advanced computer programming and databases to business-oriented organizational theories, project management, and enterprise information systems in the US and India at corporate, graduate, and undergraduate levels. Currently she teaches courses related to object oriented analysis, design, programming, and data structures for application development.
Research
Her research interests are in the field of Higher Education, focusing primarily on teaching practice in the field of information sciences and technology. In her doctoral dissertation, she studied the impact of online education, thereby effectively integrating research with her teaching.
Industry
Starting with system-level software programming, Neelam progressed to project and program management, managing large IT outsourcing programs with over $25 m annual revenue and over hundred globally-distributed team-members. She also worked in presales in IT-services. Her software industry experience spans customized application development and implementation as well as product development. These experiences are complemented by her multiple certifications, such as PMI PMP, APICS CSCP, SAP TERP 10, and QAI CSQA.
