Overview
Naima Afif is currently a postdoctoral research associate in the framework of the project « The Syriac Galen Palimpsest: Galen’s On Simple Drugs and the Recovery of Lost Texts through Sophisticated Imaging Techniques ». She is responsible for decipherment, identification and transcription of the Syriac Galen Palimpsest undertext. She is also in charge of creating bilingual corpora and computational lexical tools as research aids for further study of the Galenic treatise. She has been liaising with the Sketch Engine team and the GREgORI Project -Softwares, linguistic data and tagged corpus for ancient GREek and ORIental languages.
Biography
After graduating in Oriental Languages and Literatures at the Université libre de Bruxelles, Naima Afif hold a Master degree and a PhD in Oriental Studies at the Université catholique de Louvain. Her doctoral thesis explores the first Hebrew version of the Quran made from Arabic during the Jewish Enlightenment in Germany. Her other main research interests focus on contacts between religions and cultures in the East and the Mediterranean region. The languages covered are Arabic, Syriac, Hebrew, Ancient Greek and Berber. Since 2015, she has been a Scientific Collaborator at the Oriental Institute of Louvain (CIOL) and a member of the Centre for the Study of Gregory of Nazianzus.
