EXPERTISE/RESEARCH INTERESTS

Professor Nailya Ordabayeva’s research focuses on sensory and social influences in consumer purchase decisions. She studies how sensory factors such as visual perception of package and portion size, and social factors such as social status and hierarchy, work to improve or undermine optimal consumer decisions. Her findings identify new strategies, such as innovative package design, that utilize sensory and social influences in the marketplace to help improve business performance while promoting consumer wellbeing.

Dr. Ordabayeva’s research has appeared in the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Psychology, the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, the Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, and the Journal of Marketing Management. Her article on how the social hierarchy affects status spending among bottom-tier consumers received the Journal of Consumer Research Best Article Award, and it was featured in the Journal of Consumer Research Curation on Social Influence and Consumer Behavior. Her paper on the dimensionality bias in perceptions of package and portion supersizing was Finalist to the Best Paper Award at the Trans-Atlantic Doctoral Conference (London Business School), and it received the Best Paper Finalist prize from the Syntec Management Consulting Association of France. Professor Ordabayeva was a recipient of a highly competitive €250,000 VENI grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), and her findings have received coverage in popular media outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Forbes Magazine, _and _USA Today.
