Biography

Dr. Mustafa holds a joint adjunct Senior Lecturer appointment at the University Scholars Programme and the Residential College 4, National University of Singapore (NUS). Dr. Mustafa is concurrently a Visiting Professor at the Islamic University of Indonesia, Visiting Fellow at the National University of Malaysia and Adjunct Professor at Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah of India. He has also held teaching and research fellowships at the University of Indonesia, Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia and Symbiosis School of International Studies India, and has served as Lee Kong Chian Research Fellow with the National Library Board, Singapore.

Dr. Mustafa earlier served as Director of International Relations Studies at Beaconhouse National University in Pakistan, a Fulbright Scholar at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and Ohio University’s Center for International Studies, and a Global Public Policy Network Scholar at Peking University's School of International Studies in China. A keen observer of Southeast Asian affairs, Dr. Mustafa received his PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on a scholarship by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, which he subsequently served as a Research Fellow in Regional Strategic and Political Studies. He also served as a Research Fellow at the NUS Institute of South Asian Studies, working on the South Asia-Southeast Asia relations.

Dr. Mustafa serves on several international advisory or editorial boards of academic journals of repute. He is a frequent commentator on the mass media related to issues pertaining to Singapore and Southeast Asia. He conducts research on neoclassical realist theory, small states and middle powers in Southeast Asia, namely Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore.

Outside of academia, Dr. Mustafa has served more than 25 years as a volunteer, namely with the Malay Youth Literary Association (4PM). Dr. Mustafa received the NUS Outstanding Young Alumni Award and JCI’s Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World Award in 2019. He was an earlier recipient of the National Youth Achievement Gold Award, and on behalf of 4PM, the Singapore Youth Award and Commonwealth Youth Award.
