Strathmore Business School

Dr. Mumbi Maria Wachira is a full-time accounting lecturer at Strathmore University Business School, Nairobi. She obtained both her Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and Master of Commerce (MCom) degrees at Strathmore University, and her Ph.D. at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Her research focuses on the intersections between accounting practice, society, and the environment. Her work has been presented in several accounting conferences, such as the American Accounting Association (AAA), European Accounting Association (EAA), and the African Accounting and Finance Association forums. She has also published articles in internationally recognized and peer-reviewed journals on the status quo of sustainability and environmental reporting among select countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Her teaching areas are Financial Reporting, Forensic Accounting, Accounting Theory, Sustainability Accounting, and Accounting Fraud. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate programs within the business school. In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Wachira has also been involved in the training and consulting of micro-enterprises operating within Nairobi in collaboration with the Institute for Small Business Initiatives (ISBI). Currently, she is involved in developing customized executive programs for businesses seeking to adopt sustainability reporting and integrated reporting. She is also the academic lead in developing a short executive course on Creating Shared Value (CSV) that is aligned to Harvard’s offering on the same. The course will be offered in 2020.
