Dr. Mohan Subramaniam is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management at the Carroll School of Management in Boston College. His current research focuses on the Digital Transformation of Incumbent Industrial firms and new sources of Competitive Advantage in the Digital Age. His work articulates how traditional firms, long accustomed to competing within familiar industry structures, find new sources of value and growth within emerging digital ecosystems.

Dr. Subramaniam has also extensively studied Global Competitive Strategy and the Strategic Management of Knowledge & Innovation. He has published his work in multiple leading academic journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, the Academy of Management Journal, and the Journal of International Business Studies, along with leading practitioner journals such as the Harvard Business Review and the Sloan Management Review.

Dr. Subramaniam’s research has won awards from the Strategic Management Society, McKinsey Corporation, Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, and the Decision Sciences Institute. His research has also received grants from the National Science Foundation and the Carnegie Bosch Institute.

Apart from the Carroll School, Dr. Subramaniam has taught in several international programs in France, Austria and Germany and in multiple executive programs around the world. He has taught senior executives at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland, lectured for Telekom Austria and Voestalpine Steel in Austria, along with companies such as General Motors, Fineos Corporation, Nextel and Hamilton Sunstrand in the United States. In India, he has also conducted workshops on Strategic Leadership for Tata Consulting Services and on Digital Strategy for the Aditya Birla Group and at ISB in Hyderabad for senior executives of Godrej Consumer Products, Cognizant Technologies, Honeywell Corporation, Hero Corporation, Bajaj Group, and the National Thermal Power Corporation among others.

EXPERTISE/RESEARCH INTERESTS

Professor Mohan Subramaniam specializes in the areas of global strategy, managing multinational companies and the strategic management of knowledge and innovation. His more recent work includes new strategic frameworks for the digital economy and ecosystems.  His research appears in several leading management journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Management, and the Harvard Business Review. His research has also received several grants including those from Novell Corporation, the National Science Foundation and the Carnegie Bosch Institute, and awards from the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society, McKinsey & Company and the Decision Sciences Institute.

He teaches courses in strategy, global strategy and innovation management. Professor Subramaniam has consulted with and taught senior executives at leading global companies including General Motors, Hamilton Sunstrand, Nextel, New Balance, Voestalpine, Tata Consulting Services and executive development programs at the University of Connecticut and Boston College.

Professor Subramaniam is a member of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society and the Academy of International Business.

He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Management.
