Biography
Kelley School of Business
I am a Lecturer in the Kelley School of Business where I teach business-communication courses. For three years I collaborated with a terrific team in designing and teaching "Compass" - an innovative undergrad curriculum offering an integrated set of critical-thinking, rhetorical, and professional skills that enables students to thoughtfully develop their professional identity (via personal branding, networking, etc.), communicate with professional audiences, and demonstrate leadership. After launching Compass, I moved back into my "native" discipline, turning my attention to undergrad business-writing and MBA presentations courses.
Before arriving at Kelley, I developed an extensive background in curriculum design and digital pedagogy through administrative positions in the IU Department of English, including: Assistant Director of Composition, Assistant Director of Digital Composition, and Teaching Fellow.
Throughout my cross-disciplinary career, the “tie that binds” is my love of teaching and curriculum design. I bring my training in rhetoric and critical thinking, forged in the liberal arts, to the challenges faced by business students and professionals in the frenetic, mass-mediated world of work. My aim, always, is to help professionals become acute critical thinkers, writers, and speakers who have the confidence and tools necessary to formulate sharp ideas and effectively communicate them.
I do this by focusing not only on my own classroom but also on larger learning initiatives at the department and university level - for instance, founding a teaching development committee in my department at KSB, piloting IU English’s first digital-writing program, and designing KSB’s first online undergraduate course in leadership.
By the same token, I enjoy consulting with community and corporate organizations on communication initiatives - for instance, designing online training modules for CareerBuilder and presenting strategic planning tools to SCIHRA .
