Michael Anderson graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1986 with a B. Sc. in Biological Sciences.  He received his D. Phil. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Oxford in 1990 and which involved research into human complement.  After postdoctoral positions at the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham, he was appointed a research associate in the School of Medicine, University of Manchester in 1993.  In 2001, he was promoted to Research Fellow.  He worked with Professor David Denning from 1993 to 2006. In 2011, he returned to The University of Manchester to take up his current role
