Dr. Meagan Bryand Sovine has been a Professor at Houston Community College since 2014 and a Communication Coach for the University of Texas at Houston since 2016. She has taught communication courses at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, West Virginia University, Owens Community College, and San Jacinto College-North. She is also a certified mediator in the state of Texas. Dr. Sovine earned a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies with a Speech emphasis and two minors in Public Relations and Art History from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC). Additionally, Dr. Sovine earned a master’s degree in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Instructional Communication from TAMUCC. Soon after earning these two degrees, she pursued a Ph.D. in Instructional Communication at West Virginia University. Dr. Sovine has a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership with and emphasis in Communication from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
Dr. Sovine's research interests include college persistence among minority populations, instructor-student interpersonal relationships, the impact of conflict in the classroom on learning, the impact of instructors' misbehaviors, and retention and attrition issues facing higher educational organizations. Recently, Dr. Sovine explored the impact of family support and student-to-student connectedness on students' intent to persist in college.
In addition to working as a professor at HCC, Dr. Sovine performs community outreach for the National Kidney Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, the American Heart Association, Tee Time for Autism, and United Way. This year she serves on the Ladies Go Texan Committee for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Dr. Sovine is a Houston native and enjoys traveling abroad to learn about different cultures. Every year she travels to various regions of Mexico to improve her Spanish speaking abilities.
