Experience

Maureen spent 28 years in the U.S. Army, where she held various staff and leadership positions, as well as flying UH-1 helicopters in the continental United States and Europe. Most noteworthy was her assignment as the Professor and Head of the Department of Physical Education from 1997 until her retirement in 2004. Her position carried the unique title “Master of the Sword.” She was the first woman to chair a department chair at the U.S. Military Academy since it was founded in 1802. Upon her retirement, Maureen was advanced to the rank of Brigadier General. Recently, Maureen served as the Executive Director of the Feagin Leadership Program at Duke Sports Medicine.

Scholarly Work/Publications/Awards

Maureen’s research interests have focused on leadership as well as fitness and wellness. Maureen served as co-editor of Fit & Active: The West Point Physical Development Program. She also wrote an article titled, Developing a philosophy of leadership, which was published in Military Review. Awards include: Mary Ella Lund Soule Award, for demonstrating outstanding performance in graduate studies in the Department of Sports Studies at the University of Georgia and the Army’s Distinguished Service Medal. Additionally, she has been inducted into the Hall of Fame, St. Bonaventure University Reserve Officer Training Corps, the Academic Wall of Fame, Olean Senior High School and was selected as the 2016 University of Georgia Department of Kinesiology Distinguished Alumnus.
