Dr Mary Coupland lectures first year mathematics subjects and enjoys inspiring future scientists and engineers to be successful in using mathematics. She also teaches quantitative literacy in the undergraduate subject "Arguments, Evidence and Intuition", an elective for all UTS students. Teams led by Dr Coupland have won teaching citations at university and at national levels, and she has been awarded a personal citation for excellence in teaching mathematics at UTS.

Dr Coupland is passionate about encouraging teachers to contribute to their profession and she is an honorary life member of the Mathematical Association of New South Wales, the state professional association for teachers of mathematics at all levels. She held a two year voluntary appointment as President of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers. (2014 – May 2016). For her work with Professional Teachers associations she was awarded the Outstanding Professional Service Award by the Professional Teachers Council, NSW, in 2012 and the Exceptional Service Award in 2020. Dr Coupland is also a member of the professional body for mathematicians, the Australian Mathematical Society.
