Biography

Martin S. Shanguhyia’s research focuses on colonial and postcolonial Africa, with a specific concentration on Eastern Africa. Of particular interest to him is the intersection between Environment and state and community interests—macro and micro agencies—within the lens of politics, economy, and tradition. His most recent major publication is Population, Tradition & Environmental Control in Colonial Kenya, 1920-1963 (Rochester, NY: University of Rochester Press, December 2015). This monograph examines the impact of demographic, cultural, and agricultural changes on colonial soil conservation and land preservation policies in colonial Western Kenya, and community responses to those policies. His current research project analyzes how colonial borders have shaped inter-ethnic relations in the international borderlands of northwestern Kenya. He is also interested in the outcomes of wildlife conservation on human communities in East Africa. Shanguhyia has recently co-edited (with Toyin Falola) the Palgrave Handbook of African Colonial and Postcolonial History (2018).
