Executive School of Management, Technology and Law
Martin Eling is doing empirical research in the intersection of insurance management, mathematics, and economics. After his doctoral degree in 2005 he joined the I.VW as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2008 he was visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Then in 2009 he was appointed Professor of Insurance at the University of Ulm. Since November 2011 he is Director of the I.VW and holds the Chair for Insurance Management at the University of St.Gallen. The Chair was established with support of the Swiss insurance industry.
Research Focus
The Chair for Insurance Management works internationally, empirically, and application-oriented. The current research focus of the chair include the following areas:
- Digitalization (cyber risk, big data and artificial intelligence)
- Microinsurance
- Social security (pension and healthcare)
Other research fields of the chair are asset management, risk management, performance measurement, and regulation.

- Since November 2011 Director of the Institute of Insurance Economics and Professor in Insurance Management at the University of St. Gallen
- 2010 and 2011 Visiting Lecturer at the University of Torino and Urbino (Italy)
- 2009-2011 Director of the Institute of Insurance and Professor in Insurance at the University of Ulm (Germany)
- 2009 Habilitation in business administration at the University of St. Gallen
- 2008 Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA)
- 2005-2009 Senior Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of St. Gallen
- 2005 Dr. rer. pol. from the University of Münster; Title of dissertation: "Hedgefonds-Strategien und ihre Performance im Asset Management von Finanzdienstleistungsunternehmen"
