Marie Griffiths

My main teaching focus is upon the role of digital technologies in the business setting specialises in the convergence of the ‘real’ and digital worlds and the social influences of technology. Teaching commitments lie within this area teaching Emerging Technologies, Information Security, Enterprise 2.0 and Information Systems. I have recently been awarded along with my colleague Dr Kutar a Vice Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching award for our innovative teaching approach using Inquiry Based Learning.

Current KTP: Tameside City Council, which is a project to reclaim empty houses and reduce homelessness within the borough. Digital technologies will be exploited to assist in identification and engagement with reluctant, uninformed and possibly vulnerable social groups. (with Dr Lisa Scullion)

Previous Job Roles: Since joining the University of Salford as a Research Associate on a European Social Funded (ESF) project from 2004 - 2006, I worked on two gender and technology related projects, Women in IT (WinIT) and Disappearing Women from ICT. Given the volume of research output we were one of the largest gender research group in Europe at the times. Prior to that I worked as an IT Manager at a Managing Consultants Outplacement company based in the North West which was very different direction to my first job role of a Chef.

TEACHING

I teach on the Business and IT (BIT) course at Salford Business School, so all my teaching is related to the areas of IM and IS: The following list of teaching activities are part of my current workload though I have taught on a wide range of other IS related modules:

I am currently supervising five PhD students, in the areas of Information Governance, Business Ethics and Communities of Practice. Teaching and Learning Technologies, ICT Strategies for SME’s and Ecommerce for SMEs. Contribution to the SBS doctoral school I have been involved in the PhD assessment process for 20 students (at the Interim and Internal assessment phase) PhD examining: 2012 – University of Salford x2, de Montfort University in August 2012 and University of Finland August 2012, Manchester Metropolitan in November 2012, Manchester University 2012 I have teach/taught on a number of different modules, and courses on both undergraduate and postgraduate levels:

• Module Leader for Emerging Technologies to 250 students (level 4)
• Module Leader fro Contemporary Issues in IS (level 6),
• Module Leader for Information Security (level 6)
• Professional Issues in IT (level 7)
• Module Leader for Issues in Strategic Issues IS (level 7)
• Module Leader for Information Systems (level 7)
• Supervise Master and UG dissertations
• Placement Supervisor for the past 4 years (Level 5)

RESEARCH INTERESTS

I have significant experience gained working on varied digital research projects which have explored the commercial and societal implications of technological change. My current research agenda focuses upon young people and digital media, exploring their behaviour in virtual spaces, their roles as ‘prosumers’ in social networking sites, the extensive media hubs that now surround even very young children and understanding the potential consequences of this digital saturation.

I was invited onto a panel for Radio 4’s You and Yours to discuss this provocative topic Additionally I am presenting my research and am part of the organising Committee for AoIR 2012 an internationally renowned conference. I also researches identity, privacy and surveillance technologies and works with Fletcher and Kutar on the Day in the Digital Life project.

PhD Supervision

I currently supervise PhD students in the following areas:

education and technology, cybercrime, mobile gaming and young people and impact of disruptive technologies on logistics in the telecommunication sector

I would be interested in supervising future doctoral students in the area of:

• digital, the possibilities of technology and the role of information systems on society and organisations
