Biography

Mariam F. Alkazemi, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of public relations at the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture. She also serves as the School's Coordinator for Research and Global Initiatives. The focal point of Dr. Alkazemi's research is international communication, and she has many experiences working on interdisciplinary research projects. Dr. Alkazemi has focused on the intersection of Middle East Studies and Media Studies. She co-authored a book published by Wolters Kluwer on Kuwaiti media law. Other recent articles deal with the intersection of media with religion, oil prices, culture and other issues that are commonly analyzed in Middle East Studies. Other interdisciplinary projects involve the intersection of communication technologies and the built environment of healthcare facilities.

Her research appears in International Communication Gazette, Journal of Media & Religion, Journalism, Newspaper Research Journal, Communication Law & Policy, Corporate Communications, and Health Environments Research & Design Journal. She has received awards for her research from the Arab-U.S. Association for Communication Educators (AUSACE) and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), and her research has been presented at other associations, including World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), World Journalism Education Congress (WJEC) and International Communication Association (ICA).

She has served as an officer for AEJMC's Religion and Media Interest Group since 2014 and will be the head of it in the 2018-2019 academic year. Further, Dr. Alkazemi will serve as a Kopenhaver Center Fellow for 2018 and attend a workshop entitled, "Women Faculty Moving Forward: Securing the Future".

Previously, Dr. Alkazemi taught in Kuwait at Gulf University for Science and Technology and at the University of Florida. Dr. Alkazemi has served as a research fellow at the Middle East Centre of the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2016 and the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2017. She received the Carnegie fellowship in support of Arab social sciences in the fall of 2017 and was at the University of North Carolina that semester. Dr. Alkazemi earned her doctorate at the University of Florida in 2014, her master’s degrees from Michigan State University in 2009 and her bachelor's from George Washington University.
