Biography

Prof Margie Sutherland is a Professor Emeritus at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria.

Prof Sutherland worked in the human resource field in a wide range of industries, including mining, manufacturing, hotels, agriculture, and retail as well as in the Holding Company of S.A. Breweries. She lectured in the Psychology Department at Wits University, the Institute of Personnel Management, for the Institute of Marketing Management, at Wits Business School for fourteen years and at GIBS for twelve years. Her fields of interest are Employer-of-choice Branding, Talent Management, Retention Management, Career Capital, Organisational Responses to HIVAIDS, Paradox Management, Creating Organisational Energy, Performance Management, and the Social Relevance of Business in developing markets. She attended Harvard Business School’s programme on case-based teaching.

Prof Sutherland was appointed an associate professor in 2006 and a full professor in 2009 at GIBS where she lectured on all aspects of performance management, organizational behaviour, sustainable leadership, and social relevance of business on both academic, executive, and company-specific programmes. She has supervised more than 170 MBA student research reports.

Prof Sutherland won 14 teaching excellence awards and was Co-winner of the Aspen Leadership Institute prize for world-wide lecturers tackling large scale social issues. She taught for Unicef in Cambodia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Hong Kong, Philippines and at the Rotterdam School of Management to their full-time MBA programme.

Prof Sutherland has published 27 peer-reviewed articles in a range of academic journals, has published several case studies with Ivey and has three chapters in books. She also serves on several journal editorial committees and has acted as an external examiner for 7 universities. She now consults to GIBS in designing new, innovative academic programmes, assisting with the admission processes, mentoring faculty, as well as supervising and evaluating research.

  • In 2016 she was a joint winner of the distinguished American Aspen Faculty Pioneer Award for innovative business professors teaching about the most pressing “grand challenges” faced by our society and environment today (Aspen Institute)
