Louise Fleming

Dr Louise Fleming is an Honorary Senior Fellow in Respiratory Paediatrics and part of the Paediatric Severe Asthma Research Group. She is Deputy Senior Tutor for Phase 2 MBBS (Year 4) and a Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician West London Children's Hospital (part of Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust) and the Royal Brompton hospital.

Dr Louise Fleming completed her undergraduate degree in medicine at the University of Manchester before moving to London for postgraduate training in Paediatrics. This included an 18-month VSO/RCPCH Fellowship in The Gambia.

Dr Fleming undertook postgraduate research at NHLI and the Royal Brompton Hospital, funded by the British Lung Foundation, under the supervision of Professor Andrew Bush and Dr Nicola Wilson. She carried out a randomised controlled trial investigating the use of inflammatory markers to guide management in children with severe asthma.

Dr Fleming’s research interests include characterizing problematic severe asthma; monitoring asthma including adherence and use of biomarkers; identification of novel therapeutic targets and non-pharmacological management of asthma including behaviour change. Current work includes the use of novel adherence monitoring devices, understanding determinants of poor adherence in the individual and targeting interventions accordingly. Clinically she looks after children with a wide range of respiratory problems. Interests include the systematic multi-disciplinary assessment of children with problematic severe asthma and dysfunctional breathing. She is a member of the difficult asthma team at the Royal Brompton where she has developed the difficult asthma protocol and the National Registry for children with difficult asthma.

Dr Fleming is a member of the GINA Science Committee, Asthma UK Health Professionals Council (past chair), BPRS Executive Committee and RSM Paediatrics and Child Health Council (past president). She has previously served on the BTS Specialist Advisory Group for Severe Asthma and the BTS/SIGN clinical guidelines group. She is an Associate Editor (respiratory) for Archives of Disease in Childhood. She is a strong advocate for children with asthma and improving care to deliver better outcomes. In order to achieve this, she is a member of a number of networks including the London Asthma Leadership and Implementation Group, London Paediatric Severe Asthma Group (Chair), Children and Young People Asthma Oversight Group and North West London Paediatric asthma network.
