Lhawang Ugyel is currently a Lecturer at the Development Policy Centre of the Crawford School of Public Policy, and a Visiting Lecturer in Public Policy at the University of Papua New Guinea. He is also an Honorary Academic at the Policy and Governance Program at the Crawford School of Public Policy.

From July 2014 to June 2016, he was a Research Fellow at the Crawford School of Public Policy teaching into the Masters of Public Policy Program and conducting independent research. Prior to completing his PhD program at the ANU in 2014, he worked for the Royal Government of Bhutan in various capacities. He was the Senior Human Resource Officer for the Royal Civil Service Commission Secretariat for 7 years. He also worked for 3 years as a Policy Analyst with the People’s Project Research Office, a think tank organization started by His Majesty the King of Bhutan.

During his PhD program, he worked for the Australian Diabetes Educators Association as a Research Officer from 2010-12, and as a Research Assistant for the project funded by ANZSOG to develop a diagnostic tool to test organisational readiness for change from 2012-13.

His field of research is comparative public administration specializing in public sector reforms, policy transfer, evaluation studies and cross-cultural studies.
