Biography

HEC Paris

I am an Associate Professor of Finance at Ghent University. You also often find me in the National Bank of Belgium as a visiting researcher.

Currently, I'm a visiting Professor in the Finance department at HEC Paris .

I co-organize the Brussels EFI Network with Mike Mariathasan (KU Leuven) and Olivier De Jonghe (NBB, Tilburg Uni). The aim of EFI Network is to bring together researchers with an interest in empirical financial intermediation, who live near, work near, or frequently pass through the (wider) Brussels region.

Banks gain expertise from specialization. This includes superior knowledge on zombie borrowers and their negative impact on healthy borrowers. We show that this induces specialized banks to reduce zombie lending. Moreover, this channel is stronger in sectors that are more likely to suffer from zombie firms' presence and that have better growth opportunities. Finally, we find that this channel is weaker in sectors where a potential default of a zombie borrower is more likely to trigger reductions in the collateral value of healthy borrowers.
