Karen W. Braun, PhD, CPA, CGMA, professor of accountancy, is the lead author of Managerial Accounting (Fifth Edition), a textbook used at over 200 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. Since her initial faculty appointment in 2006, she has received the Weatherhead Undergraduate Teaching Award four times, most recently in 2017, by the vote of Weatherhead undergraduate students. Braun’s teaching interests center on managerial accounting, which stems from her prior work experiences as an auditor for Arthur Andersen & Company and as a corporate controller. Her primary research interests focus on accounting education, lean operations, and sustainability. Braun’s teaching philosophy encourages students to think like business people first and then focus on how managerial accounting can be used to help solve business problems. Braun is often invited to speak to campus student groups about personal financial planning.

On a national level, Braun is actively involved in accounting education. In 2015 and 2016, she co-chaired the national Conference on Teaching and Learning in Accounting (CTLA). In 2016, she received the national Bea Sanders/AICPA Innovation in Teaching Award. She was also named the 2017 Business Information Professional of the Year in the category of Education by Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor organization for financial information students and professionals. Her publications have appeared in the Journal of Accounting Education, Issues in Accounting Education, and Contemporary Accounting Research.
