Biography
Aalto University School of Business
Juha Paavola has been Professor/Associate Professor of Structural Mechanics at Aalto University (former Helsinki University of Technology) since 1990. He has been the Head of the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, 2008-2015, Vice Dean of the School of Engineering at Aalto University from 2008 to 2013 and the Vice Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2005-2007. His research work and professional interests are: Numerical Computation Technique, Finite Element Analysis, Structural Stability, Heat Transfer Problems and Teaching of Structural Mechanics. Paavola received his M.Sc. degree in 1977, Lic.Tech. degree in 1988 and D.Sc. (Tech.) in Civil Engineering, Structural Mechanics in 1990. He has been a Visiting Scholar at City University London, UK 1991-1992 and 2001 and at Graz Technical University, Austria in 2002, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA 2016 and University of California Davis, USA 2016. He is a member of the General Assembly of International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and a member of the network European Civil Engineering Education and Training (EUCEET). In Finland, he is the Chair of the Finnish National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and the Vice Chair of the Finnish Association for Structural Mechanics.
BACKGROUND
Juha Paavola has been before a Bridge Designer in the Consultancy PONTEK, 1975-1977, Research Assistant of Structural Mechanics at Helsinki University of Technology, 1977-1980, Research Scientist at Technical Research Centre of Finland, Fire Technology Laboratory, 1981-1985, and Senior Assistant of Structural Mechanics at Helsinki University of Technology, 1985-1990.
