Juanjo Galan Vivas

Juanjo Galan has been appointed to the position of Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture. Galan’s research focuses on Landscape Planning, Urban Planning and Landscape Design. MAIN INTERESTS AND RESEARCH FIELDS: LANDSCAPE DESIGN: Methodologies in landscape design: from social values to concepts, from concepts to formal and functional strategies, from strategies to final designs. The role of Urban Parks and Green areas in cities and human settlements. LANDSCAPE & URBAN PLANNING: Sustainability and Urban Planning: Existing and new models. Ecodistricts: the role of the open space. Green urban systems. Ecologic principles in regional, local and punctual landscape interventions. Transformation of derelict or damaged sites: the role and possibilities of landscape and ecology in land use changes (abandoned industrial sites or harbours, quarries and mining sites, etc.). LANDSCAPE AND REGIONAL PLANNING: Landscape Planning and Landscape Visual assessment. Methodologies for the use of Landscape inputs in Regional Planning. Green Infrastructures as a planning and landscape tool. The regional scale in regional and landscape effective planning. Public Participation in Landscape and territorial Planning (regional or local). Management and public use of Natural Areas and Green urban areas. Regional Sustainability: towards a deeper relationship between natural / agricultural / industrial and urban areas. BACKGROUND After finishing his Master studies at the Master of Landscape Architecture in the Heriot Watt University of Edinburgh, Juanjo Galan earned a doctor of landscape architecture in 2011 from the Department of Urban Planning at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he spent ten years as teacher, researcher and as founder-coordinator of the Master in Landscape and Garden Design. During this period Juanjo also developed an intense institutional and professional career as president of the Spanish Association of Landscape Architects, as external advisor of the Department of Regional Planning of the Valencian Autonomous Region and as director of the Galan Vivas landscape architecture practice.
