Biography
The London School of Economics and Political Science
Dr. Jose Javier Olivas Osuna leads an interdisciplinary comparative project on populism and secessionism at the National Distance Education University (UNED) in Madrid. He is also affiliated to the Conflict and Civil Society Research Unit, at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where he co-founded the interdisciplinary research group (and academic blog) Euro Crisis in the Press, coordinated the project ‘Debating Brexit impact at local level: a mixed methods comparative study’ and taught many years. Jose Javier holds a PhD in Government (LSE) and an MSc in Public Policy and Administration (LSE). He previously completed University degrees in Economics and Business (ETEA), Market Research (ETEA) and European Studies (EDHEC). Jose Javier has done public policy consulting work for the European Commission and European Court of Auditors. Jose Javier is the author of the Iberian Military Politics: Controlling the Armed Forces during Dictatorship and Democratisation (2014, London: Palgrave MacMillan) and of Revolutionary versus Reactionary: Contrasting Portuguese and Spanish Civil-Military Relations during Democratization (2019, War & Society) which combine comparative historical research with policy instruments and neo-institutional theory. He has also published articles on civil-military relations and on media interpretations of the Euro Crisis, as well as the report Preventing corruption at local and regional level in South Mediterranean countries (2018, European Committee of the Regions, with Clara Volintiru). He is currently analysing the causes of Brexit andthe interplay between populism and nationalism. He has developed a methodology to quantify and compare the intensity of populist features in political discourses and individuals’ attitudes. José is also interested in Public Policy, inequality and Spanish politics.
