Jonathan left school at 16 years old to work as an apprentice centre lathe turner for V.R. Brooks Ltd. As part of his apprenticeship he studied Mechanical Engineering on a day release basis at Stockport College, completing BTEC ONC and HNC. He then read for a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and the University of Bradford and then a PhD in Laser Materials Processing at the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST).

Jonathan has worked as a Project Engineer and held senior academic posts overseas and in the UK. He has been active in laser materials processing and associated fields of research for 26 years, developing new science and approaches that have yielded seven patents, eight books, 10 book chapters and over 170 international journal papers.

His research attracts funding from international government sources, and national and international industry; amounting to over £7.6 million since 2001. Jonathan is Editor-in-Chief of Lasers in Engineering and the International Journal of Laser Science.
