John Minahan

Dr. Minahan is an expert in the management of large institutional investment programs. He has more than 20 years of experience conducting investment manager due diligence, giving asset allocation and risk management advice, and managing departments performing these functions. He has advised defined benefit pension funds, 401(k) plans, insurance companies, and endowments with collective assets in the tens of billions. He has evaluated hundreds of investment vehicles and strategies, including both hedge funds and long-only strategies. From 2010 through 2015, he was a Senior Lecturer in Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he taught project-based courses in finance research and consulting. Prior to joining MIT, he was a senior investment strategist and director of research at New England Pension Consultants Inc., where he advised pension funds and endowment funds on asset allocation, risk management, and the evaluation of investment managers and strategies. Dr. Minahan was previously the national director of investment services for MetLife, where he oversaw more than $35 billion in assets backing group annuity contracts. He has served as an expert several times, mostly in regard to the prudence of processes used to evaluate investment managers. In an ERISA class action, Dr. Minahan provided deposition testimony related to the due diligence process that the retirement plan service provider used to evaluate sub-advisors. He has served on the boards of several organizations, including the Boston Security Analysts Society, where he held the role of president. Dr. Minahan also sits on the steering committee of Boston QWAFAFEW, a quantitative research discussion group, and he is active in the CFA Institute, a global association of investment professionals.
