Johanna Mair

Johanna is a Professor of Organization, Strategy and Leadership at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin and the Hewlett Foundation Visiting Scholar at the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society. She currently serves as the academic editor of Stanford Social Innovation Review.

Her research lies at the intersection of organizations, institutions and social change. More specifically, she is interested in how institutions stifle and enable social and economic progress and the role of organizational activity in this process. Johanna has served on the faculty of IESE Business School from 2001- 2011 and held visiting positions at Stanford University, Harvard Business School, INSEAD, Copenhagen Business School, the Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien and was appointed a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford in 2006.

At the Hertie School of Governance her teaching centers on leadership, social innovation and managing public problems. In addition she co-teaches a PhD course on Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford University. She serves on the academic board of the Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets at the Stockholm School of Economics and the INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Program (ISEP) and collaborates with the Harvard Kennedy School. At IESE her teaching focused on corporate strategy and entrepreneurial strategies for social impact at the MBA, Global Executive MBA and Executive Education programs; strategy research on the Ph.D. program; and course design on the International Faculty Development Program.

Johanna has received numerous awards for her research and publications. In 2007 she was recognized as a "Faculty Pioneer" by the Aspen Institute and received the Ashoka Award for Social Entrepreneurship Education. Her research was awarded the 2007 Strategic Management Society "Best Paper for Practice Implications Award" and the 2008 Gold Prize of the IFC-Financial Times Essay Competition (jointly with Christian Seelos). In addition, IESE honored her research and teaching activities with the Annual Research Excellence Award in 2005 and 2007. In 2015 she received the "Hertie School Excellence Award for Research, Teaching and Citizenship".

She has co-authored "Innovation and Scaling for Impact - How effective Social Enterprises do it" (with Christian Seelos; Stanford University Press) and is the co-editor of three books on social entrepreneurship. She has written or co-written numerous book chapters, articles published in leading scholarly journals and magazines and published numerous case studies and teaching notes. She serves on the editorial board of several academic journals.

Before earning her Ph.D. in management from INSEAD (France), Johanna was directly involved in many aspects of the executive decision-making process in international banking. Today, alongside her academic duties she is a member of the Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation at the World Economic Forum and serves on the board of a selected list of foundations and social impact ventures.
