Biography

University of Technology Sydney

Professor Joellen Munton is a leading expert in labour law. She has a particular interest in how working conditions can be improved for people working in new and emerging forms of work, such as on-demand work in the so-called ‘gig economy’.

Joellen has an extensive track-record in doctrinal scholarship in the field of employment contract law and labour law more generally. In recent years, she has engaged in reform-oriented legal research to better align labour law with society’s changing needs. For example, with UTS Law Faculty colleague Dr Michael Rawling, Joellen was funded by the Transport Education Audit Compliance Health Organisation (TEACHO) to develop a proposed regulatory framework for road transport workers in the on demand economy. Joellen has also recently written on the impact of COVID-19 on workplace regulation, and on religious freedoms and job security.

Joellen brings to the UTS Law Faculty a great depth of experience, both in academia and in the commercial sector. She was Dean of Sydney University Law School from 2013 to 2018, worked for over a decade as a financial journalist and has also worked in private practice in commercial law. She is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and is currently the Vice-President (Academic) of the Australian Institute of Employment Rights.
