Georgia Tech Professional Education

Jim Consuegra is the Academic Director of Computing and IT programs at Georgia Tech Professional Education. He began his career at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1983 as a manager within the Georgia Tech Research Institute, where he was responsible for centers that provided computing and IT support to the institute. In 1991, he transferred to the Office of Information (OIT) as the Associate Director of Client Services and later assumed the Directorship for the Educational Technology Department.

Jim was the chief engineer and visionary for many service programs that continue to be staple formats today. These include the deployment of audio/visual technologies to over 250 classrooms, the redesign of general and dedicated student computer labs for students, development of multi-media labs, support of high-performance computing labs, Scientific Visualization labs within the College of Computing, and Instructional Technology course development.

In 1995, Jim became the Senior Project Director for the office of the Executive Director in OIT where he was responsible for the coordination of strategic Institute projects in Information Technology. He was the project lead for the “Technology Square” project (39.7 million technology budget), the build out of the Behavioral Lab in the College of Management, and the College of Management's Trading Floor. Jim was the co-sponsor and project lead for the Library-West Commons Project which won national awards for innovation and support.

In 2007, Jim joined the Distance Learning and Professional Education group, now known as Georgia Tech Professional Education. Since that time he has been the focal force behind the introduction and growth of professional education training programs in areas that include, but are not limited to Project and Program Management, Cyber Security, IT and Web technology, Usability and Accessibility design, and others.

Jim is also the Course Director for the GT Scuba program (a collaborative partnership with the Campus Recreation Center). He began his SCUBA teaching career in 1975 in Ft. Lauderdale, and currently holds several Instructor ratings including IDC Staff Instructor and the highest teaching certification given by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) - Master Instructor. Jim provides the directional leadership for GT Scuba and is the faculty adviser for the GT ScubaTech club. Jim also participated as one of the first diver volunteers for the Georgia Aquarium.
