Aalto University School of Business
J. Hillebrand Pohl, LL.M. (Harvard) writes and lectures about Law and Geoeconomics. He is a university lecturer and research fellow of the Institute for Globalization and International Regulation at Maastricht University and adjunct faculty at the United Nations University, as well as a qualified lawyer in New York, England & Wales, and Ireland. Jens is a founding Co-Director of the CELIS Institute, an independent nonprofit, nonpartisan research enterprise dedicated to promoting better regulation of foreign investment in light of security and public order concerns. He is also advisory editor and member of the editorial board of YSEC-Yearbook of Socio-Economic Constitutions. He has held visiting appointments at the Max Planck Institute for International, European, and Regulatory Procedural Law, Luxembourg; the T.M.C. Asser Institute, The Hague; and the World Trade Institute, University of Bern.
Mr. Pohl is qualified to practice law in New York, England and Wales, and Ireland. Before returning to academia, he was an associate in the New York head office of the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, where he focused on U.S. financial regulation, notably the Dodd-Frank Act, bank insolvency and restructuring, and later practiced before the U.S. Federal Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York in the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy case. He returned to Europe to serve as the first legal and compliance officer at the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), and work on the establishment of a permanent EU sovereign rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).
Mr. Pohl currently pursues a Ph.D. in law under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Peter Van den Bossche and for which he is a recipient of a Max Planck Ph.D. Scholarship. He holds an LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School, where he was a John Tjerneld Scholar and an editor of the Harvard International Law Journal, as well as degrees from Stockholm University, Stockholm School of Economics, and Oxford Institute of Legal Practice.
