Jeffrey A. Rein is the retired chairman and chief executive officer for Walgreens, the nation’s largest drugstore chain, headquartered in Deerfield, Ill. Rein joined Walgreens as an assistant store manager in 1982. He was promoted to a store manager in 1984, to a district manager in 1990, and to divisional vice president and treasurer in 1996. He was named vice president of marketing systems and services in 2000, executive vice president of marketing in 2001, and president and chief operating officer in 2003. In July 2006 he added chief executive officer duties to his responsibilities. Rein became chairman upon the retirement of David Bernauer, effective July 11, 2007, while retaining his CEO title. He retired from Walgreens as chairman and chief executive officer in October 2008. Rein earned his accounting degree in 1974 and his pharmacy degree in 1980, both from the University of Arizona, Tucson. Rein serves on the board of directors for the Meijer Company, Stat Health Services, PillGuard, Midtown Educational Foundation, Midwest Young Artists, University of Arizona College of Pharmacy National Advisory Board and University of Arizona Eller College National Advisory Board.
