Background
Janice Breuer Bass is tenured as professor in the Department of Economics at the Darla Moore School of Business. She also currently serves as the university’s faculty civility advocate. Bass earned a Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1987 and a B.S. in economics, magna cum laude, from the University of Delaware in 1982.
Bass'' research focuses on two areas: the role of culture and institutions in economic growth and economic depression and exchange rates, inflation and currency crises. Her research has been published in the Journal of Development Economics, the Economic Journal, the Journal of International Money and Finance, the Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics and other journals and edited volumes.
Bass teaches courses in intermediate macroeconomics and international monetary economics in the undergraduate, Ph.D. and International MBA programs. She has also chaired or served as a member on Ph.D. and master’s level theses. She is a recipient of the Moore School''s Outstanding Teaching Award and has been recognized by the Mortar Board for excellence in teaching.
She served a one-year appointment as visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta from 1990 to 1991. While there, she received firsthand experience about how U.S. monetary policy is made. She is also the author of a study guide for O’Sullivan and Sheffrin’s Principles of Economics, Editions 1 – 4.
Bass has two children attending Virginia Tech — a son who is studying economics and a daughter who is studying engineering.
