Biography
Frankfurt School of Finance & Management
Jan Adriaanse is professor of turnaround management at the Leiden Law School of Leiden University. He is engaged in research and consultancy projects in the interdisciplinary field of financial distress, turnaround management and insolvency law. He is an author and advisor on these subjects and a regular speaker at international conferences. In December 2005 he defended his doctoral thesis called ‘Restructuring in the Shadow of the Law. Informal Reorganization in the Netherlands’.
He is a fellow of INSOLAD, the Dutch professional body of insolvency professionals, and a member of INSOL Europe. He is board member of the Dutch Turnaround Association (DTA). In the annual Global Insolvency Practice Course of INSOL International he teaches the so-called ‘Workout Clinic’. Jan has hosted trainings and turnaround work-out workshops for among others INSOL International, US AID and the World Bank in Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda and South-Africa, as well as conferences and projects in Slovakia, Poland, Kosovo and Latvia.
Jan Adriaanse is co-founder of BFI, a corporate finance firm based in Amsterdam specializing in turnarounds, financial investigations and business valuations. In +20 years, he has served dozens of companies around the globe in challenging situations. Together with his team he also advises bankers of workout departments in dealing with turnaround situations and NPL’s including performing Independent Business Reviews and restructuring-related valuations. He has vast experience in emerging country contexts.

Jan Adriaanse focuses on the following subjects:
- Causes of corporate decline;
- Success and failure factors of corporate turnarounds;
- Stakeholder behavior in turnaround situations;
- The rescue culture: do we really need bankruptcy law?
- Big data related to business failure He is also active as a practical teacher at INSOL International Global Insolvency Practice Course and is affiliated with the Dutch Turnaround Association. He is also partner at BFI in Amsterdam
