Personal profile
Research interests
My research focuses on the international dimension of higher education: transnational education, international partnerships, faculty mobility, cultural diplomacy, research capacity building, and regionalization. I am interested in comparative studies that examine the development of higher education in the context of social and political transformations. My work also examines the intersection between higher education and international relations.
Previously, I was an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Education, Nazarbayev University, the flagship university of Kazakhstan. I was involved in developing this new international university as a member of the Faculty Senate and service committees (Research, Teaching & Learning, Ethics, etc.). I also co-led a national research project on faculty mobility and research capacity as funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan. At the University of British Columbia (Centre for Intercultural Communication), I spent nearly 10 years designing and managing international and intercultural programs for students, faculty, staff, corporate clients, adult educators, and city librarians.
I completed my PhD in Higher Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, under a fellowship awarded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. My doctorate included a specialization in Comparative, International & Development Education. My thesis focused on internationalization in East and Southeast Asia (Best Dissertation Award 2015, Comparative and International Education Society''s Special Interest Group Higher Education). I hold a master''s degree in Adult Education from the University of British Columbia.
