Biography

Ignacio Cardona is an architect (Universidad Simón Bolívar, Caracas, 1998) and urban designer (Cum Laude, UNIMET, Caracas, 2003), and a Doctor of Design candidate at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design (Cambridge, 2018). Since 2008 he has directed Arepa Architecture Ecology and Landscape (www.arepa.info), a workshop that has won several national (Venezuela) and international competitions, among them the First Prize at the XI Biennial of Venezuelan Architecture in 2014 for his project Mesuca Sports Park (Petare, Caracas), the Honorable Mention in the International Competition for Urban and Social Development of the Andean Development Corporation in 2012, and first prize in the National Competition for Urban Integration of the Centro Cultural Simón Díaz, and the National Competition for the Rescue of the PanAmerican Road.

He was recently a finalist for the Radcliffe Institute Public Art Competition of Harvard University with a controversial artistic intervention in the gardens of the Radcliffe Yard that sought to problematize the phenomenon of Latin American informal cities. He has published in several journals and presented lectures at conferences and seminars in countries such as Argentina, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, United States, and Venezuela. He works in creative methodologies of research design for the integration of various disciplines such as architecture, urban planning, art, and community social psychology, with a special emphasis on project processes for catalyzing areas with high environmental, social, and economic conflict.
