Hing-Ho Tsang

Professor at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology / Associate Professor, School of Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology

Biography

Dr. Hing-Ho Tsang aspires to develop frontier knowledge, innovative solutions, green and smart technologies for enhancing the safety of people and structures under extreme events such as earthquake, impact, bomb blast, high wind and landslide. His research addresses various UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in relation to resilient infrastructure and cities, circular economy, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, as well as reduction of poverty and inequality.

He lectured at The University of Hong Kong (2007-2012), was a Visiting Academic at The University of Melbourne on six occasions (2004-2012), and was a Visiting Professor at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany (2013, 2016). He has published over 200 articles including 50+ papers in Q1 journals. He is listed amongst the World’s Top 1% of Scientists for Career-long Impact in Civil Engineering (Elsevier). His scholarly achievements have been recognised by a dozen international awards and university prizes or fellowships. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and serves in advisory roles to governments, industry and professional bodies, developing design standards and guidelines globally.

Dr. Tsang’s holistic and multidisciplinary research program has three main thrusts:

  • Innovative Structures and Protective Systems: geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI) systems, bio-inspired structures, smart systems, strengthening and retrofit techniques
  • Community Resilience and Risk Assessment: structural vulnerability and failure risk, casualties, science-informed safety policy and decision making
  • Structural Behaviour and Building Code: structural response and collapse behaviour, characterisation of extreme actions, design standards and guidelines
