Biography
University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business
Mission: Realising the power of tri-sector solutions - aligning interests between business, government and society to develop world class investment solutions.
Heather has almost 25 years of capital market experience. She qualified as an economist at UCT in 1991 where she was recruited by the late (and great) Dr Jos Gerson. In 1998 she obtained her Charted Financial Analysis (CFA) designation.
Heather has led a number of fixed income teams within asset management, including Investec and Prudential later becoming a founding partner of African Harvest Value Managers (1999). The following 7 years saw the team grow funds under management to over R30 billion before being sold.
After a successful career in traditional fixed income management, a new challenge presented. In 2007 she founded Socially Responsible Investing within asset management, recognised as the leading impact investing initiative in SA, winning the POA Yegolide awards for 2009 and 2010.
Heather is passionate about the potential for impact investing to offer sustainable solutions to many of our social challenges. The team at ASF were inspired to develop and make investments offering excellent commercial returns as well as solve for some of our social backlogs in areas across housing, transport, health, education, the environment and broad infrastructure delivery.
The entire Atlantic team was acquired by Ashburton Investments in 2016, opening up an exciting new chapter in the drive to expand alternative solutions to our investment community; solutions which draw in the collaborative benefits of a tri-sector appoach to investing - serving the interests simultaneously of business, government and society.
Heather is also deeply involved in advocacy - founding chair of the Responsible Investing subcommittee at ASISA; founding member of CRISA; frequent lecturer to post graduate students and presenter at conferences on related topics. She recently joined the steering committee of the SA ANDE Chapter.
