Why do I teach?
Having worked at a senior level in audit, banking and insurers I have significant industry experience which I can draw on in my teaching and research. My doctoral supervisors are also two of the most distinguished scholars in the financialization literature, so I have also learned how to adopt a critical perspective as well as how to undertake high quality research. It is really satisfying to be able to pass my knowledge on to students and help them grow on their academic journey.
Academic and professional qualifications
My doctoral thesis focussed on financialization, shareholder value in banking, and the Basel regulations using the concepts of conjuncture and bricolage. I'm in the process of working on two papers for submission to acadmic journals. I'm due to sit my Viva in October 2021.
Prior to my doctoral thesis, I gained an MBA also from Manchester Business School, and qualified as an ICAS Chartered Accountant with KPMG and studied economics and accounting at the University of Stirling.
My research interests include corporate governance, CSR, financialization, Basel, bank regulatory reform, and both political and cultural economy. I'm interested in how diversity of governance models for banks (for example the new community bank movement, co-operatives, mutuals, etc) can deliver more socially useful banking, which can contribute to the challenges ahead such as climate change and inequality.
Previous employment
After qualifying as a CA I spent time at J&J, Standard Life and most recently at Lloyds Banking Group for nine years. I spent most of my time at Lloyds in the Group function working on financial performance, credit rating agency work, external reporting, and was heavily involved in post crisis capital rebuilding and the recovery strategy. Latterly I was involved in ring fencing and IFRS9 implementation.
