Biography

Imperial College London

Gerard J. Gorman, is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College, London (ICL, England) and Associate Director of ICLs Center for Computational Methods in Science and Engineering (CMSE). He holds a PhD in Computational Physics (Imperial College, London), an MSc. in High Performance Computing (National University of Ireland, Galway), and a B.Sc. in Experimental Physics (National University of Ireland, Galway). Gerard has a diverse range of experience in leadership and technical delivery of interdisciplinary research projects ranging across geoscience, industrial CFD and nuclear engineering applications with over 60 peer reviewed papers.

His work has a strong background in the broad legacy of code reengineering and boot strapping continuous integration frameworks, as well as multi-institutional open source development in community-building. His main research focus has been on model development and high-fidelity modeling software that can run on platforms ranging from laptops to supercomputers. His technical specialties include: computing, high-performance heterogeneous parallel programming; science / engineering software development; performance optimization; UNIX / Linux; schedule; OpenMP; MPI; Fortran; C/C++; Python; 3D data visualization; data management; test driven design. Gerard is the principal investigator for the Intel Parallel Computing Center (Intel PCC) on Open Performance Portable SeismiC Imaging (OPESCI). This is the first international Intel PCC, and the largest, that Intel has funded and was carried out in collaboration with BG Brasil and SENAI CIMATEC in Brazil.

He is also the principal investigator of the EPSRC network "Driving UK HPC enabling science and innovation through US collaboration", which aims to fund travel grants for up to 20 early career researchers per year who are involved in HPC. This network has already seen engagements of clear impact between the UK and US research communities, such as collaborative projects, publications and increased communication between national bodies such as CASC in the US and HPC-SIG in the UK. In addition, he is also a specialist editor in the field of mathematics and numerical methods for the journal Computer Physics Communications. Gerard is a member of the EPSRC UK HPC Scientific Advisory Committee, serves on the ARCHER Embedded Computational Science and Engineering support review panel and is a member of the Software Task Force set up by the UK E-infrastructure Leadership Council. He is also Associate Director of the Center for Computational Methods in Science and Engineering at Imperial College London; member of the Research Data Management (RDM) policy group and proposer of the Green Shoots RDM internal funding initiative; member of the Earth Science and Engineering Postgraduate Research Studies Committee; made a presentation to the House of Lords Select Committee on Digital Skills - sections of which were included in their "Make or Break: The UK's Digital Future" reports.
