George Platsis

Biography

George Platsis sits on the board of directors of the National Defense Foundation (Washington, DC), concurrently, serving as the director of the research centre. Formally, he was a Fellow at the Atlas Economic Research Foundation (Washington, DC), and specifically focuses on the intersecting issues of: security, defence and economy, with a view to understanding their influence on domestic and international public policy. In addition to serving as the program director for the Centre of Excellence in Security, Resilience and Intelligence Management at the Schulich Executive Education Centre, where he is responsible for program development, design and instruction, he has also served as adjunct faculty in York’s Disaster & Emergency Management program, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies.

He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (Schulich School of Business) and graduate degrees in Business Administration (Schulich School of Business), Disaster and Emergency Management (York University), Cybersecurity Policy (University of Maryland University College), and Constitutional Law (Osgoode Hall Law School). George is a Fellow of the National Security Management Course from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and a graduate of the Canadian Security Studies Programme from Canadian Forces College (Toronto, Ontario) and the Senior Executives in National and International Security Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. George is a Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society member and a registered mentor with the Canadian Institute of Health Research (Government of Canada). He holds memberships with multiple emergency management and risk reduction associations and has been certified by Toronto EMS as an Emergency First Responder, in addition to other first-response training and professional business continuity certifications. He has been asked to testify before Parliamentary Committees of the Government of Canada has been awarded the Deloitte Cybersecurity Award in Washington, DC.

Professionally, George is the chief administrative officer of SRI Professionals, a bi-national consultancy focusing on security and resilience measures, the principal director of Universal Relations Corporation, an organization that focuses on increased trade between Canada and international partners, and managing director of GCOR7, an interdisciplinary consultancy advising organizations of emerging threats, risk identification and prevention measures. In the not-for-profit sector, he is vice-chair and chief operating officer of the Distinguished Scholars of Canada Foundation, sits on the board of advisers for the Science in Service to Humanity Foundation (Washington, DC), and the Admiral James J. Carey Foundation (Washington, DC). Also, he has been recognized by the Government of Canada for outstanding service and contribution as a volunteer. He leads an annual trip the United Nations Headquarters (New York City, NY), as part of a delegation for youth leadership development that promotes the 8 UN Millennium Development Goals, and has been appointed as a representative of an ECOSOC organization to the United Nations NGO Committee for the Status of Women-NY, for a three-year term, ending in 2017.
