Fred Collopy
Professor, Design & Innovation at Weatherhead School of Management

Biography
Weatherhead School of Management
Professor of Design and Innovation Fred Collopy received his PhD in decision sciences from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Collopy studies the design process and uses these insights to design information tools for managers.
He also conducts research in the application of design to organizational innovation. For three decades, Collopy researched a basic problem in business forecasting—no single forecasting method performs well across all kinds of data and situations. More recently, he has been involved in efforts to conceptualize how to manage by designing, an approach to management that complements the decision-oriented approach in wide use. His interest in design extends to the design of visual instruments. Additionally, Collopy has studied how people use information in setting objectives and on how they perceive time when using information systems.
Collopy began teaching Case Western Reserve University in 1989. His courses include technology, systems thinking, and how to manage by designing. In 2008, he received the Weatherhead Teaching Excellence Award.
