Overview

I am a lecturer in Social Work on the MA Social Work programme at the University of Manchester, with a shared leadership role in Practice Learning.  The Practice Learning leads have responsibility for developing and delivering the practice based elements of the MA Social Work programme.  In doing so, we are keen to ensure that students confidently apply their academic learning to practice settings in order to promote best practice in the Social Work field and best outcomes for service users and carers.

In addition to the Practice Learning role, I take a lead on marketing within the Social Work programme at the University.

Biography

Following qualification as a Social Worker in 2007, I worked for Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council as a Social Worker on a Community Learning Disability Team, within Adult Social Care.  In 2011, I was promoted to Assistant Team Manager on the Younger Person’s Disability Team and then in 2014 I moved to become an Assistant Team Manager on a Locality Team within Stockport for adults aged 18+.  Also, in 2014 I was seconded to the University of Manchester part-time to teach on the MA Social Work programme as a specialist in adult social care.

Whilst working at Stockport MBC, I became the Council’s Social Work lead on Right to Control, a Government pilot that ran from 2010 to 2013 that promoted the integration of funding streams within people’s personal budgets at the Council.

In 2012, I was asked by BASW to speak at a fringe event at the Labour Party Conference in Manchester on the future of Social Work and took an active part in a panel discussion following my presentation.

In 2015, I became a full-time lecturer at the University of Manchester on the MA Social Work programme.
