Dilek Kurban

Dilek Kurban is a Fellow and Lecturer at the Hertie School of Governance. Her research interests include the European Court of Human Rights, legal mobilisation, authoritarian rule of law and state violence in politico-ethnic conflicts, with a specialisation in Turkey. Kurban is also the Turkey expert of the European Commission’s Network of Independent Experts in the Non-Discrimination Field. Before joining the Hertie School, Dilek was the Mercator-IPC Research Fellow at Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) and the Director of the Democratization Program at the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV). Kurban received her PhD in Law from Maastricht University in 2018 and her Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 2004. She has also completed the research project Democratization and Transnational Human Rights Regimes: A Case Study of Turkey and the European Court of Human Rights” (DEMTUREUROPE), funded by the European Commission’s Marie Curie Action Plan, under the auspices of the Hertie School of Governance.
