Derek Hughes

I'm a recent graduate from Northwestern University with essentially two Masters degrees - one in Predictive Analytics specializing in business intelligence and advanced modeling techniques and the other in Information Systems with a specialization in software development and project management. The former degree is technically considered an Advanced Certificate Degree because I took the capstone course in the latter. I scored A's in all 18 courses as well.

I'm unique in the sense that after working for 12 years in the aviation industry as an airline pilot, flight instructor, and FAA check pilot, I decided to make a career change to become a data scientist.

I have a passion for data science and love creating models, using EDA methods to find insights, tuning models for maximum accuracy, integrating Big Data technology, and conveying model results in effective, aesthetically appealing, and ethical ways. I find it fascinating to model real world phenomena to make useful predictions.

Additionally, I'm very interested in expanding my knowledge of A.I., deep learning, advanced machine learning modeling techniques, and how to merge various software platforms, such as Java, with R and other analytical platforms to create unique ways to implement analytics, especially if it involves the Internet of things or other contemporary technologies.

Some unique things about me: 1) In addition to my highly technical Masters degree, I have a Bachelors in Psychology. This helps me to communicate results very effectively, understand the motives of others, and how to handle human interaction positively. 2) I strive to lead with humility and gratitude, helping others achieve their goals, and believe in being a leader instead of a boss. 3) I currently teach a live 32 hour Data Science Certification course with R to business professionals all around the world.
