Acclaimed trumpeter David Wharton is an active performing artist and in demand music educator. His diversity as a performer spans the Orchestral, Contemporary, Baroque, and solo repertoire. Wharton played Principal Trumpet for the Berkshire Symphony for six years. He has also been a member of the Delphi Chamber Orchestra and the contemporary music ensemble Le Train Bleu, based in New York City. His orchestral experience also includes performances with the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, Wallingford Symphony, and Riverside Symphony orchestras. Wharton was a founding member of the award winning Excalibur Brass Quintet and he has appeared with the Quiet City Brass and Triton Brass quintets.

Dr. David Wharton is Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of Wyoming. He is a committed music educator who inspires enthusiasm in his students. He previously served on the faculty at the University of Rhode Island, Williams College, Bennington College, and the Hartt School of Music Pre-College. Dr. Wharton taught Brass Chamber Music at the University of Connecticut as a Graduate Assistant and he worked at the Morse Summer Music Academy at Yale University. He had the privilege of working for Yale’s Music in Schools Initiative, a program “established in 2007 to explore how music can foster social change in New Haven and Beyond.” Additionally, Dr. Wharton maintains a private lesson studio and his students have had success in regional and state competitions and festivals.

Wharton performs frequently as a soloist on the baroque trumpet. He has appeared with the American Baroque, Indianapolis Baroque, Concert Royal, the Sebastians, and the Connecticut Early Music Festival Orchestras, as well as Yale’s Schola Cantorum. Praised for his beautiful tone and flawless ornamentation, Wharton won first place at the National Trumpet Competition in the baroque category in 2007.

Currently living in Laramie with his wife Elisa and son Wyatt, David enjoys arranging music, running, kayaking, and skiing. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Connecticut, a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, a Bachelor’s degree from the Oberlin Conservatory, and he is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy. Wharton’s principal teachers include Allan Dean, Louis Hanzlik, Roy Poper, Ken Larson, and Jack Sutte.
