David Erkens is an assistant professor at the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business. His research focuses on management control systems, particularly compensation arrangements, corporate governance, and internal control systems. His work has been published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Accounting Research, Management Science, The Accounting Review, The Journal of Corporate Finance; has been covered by the press, such as Agenda, CFO Magazine and The Economist; and has informed policy-makers such as the European Commission. Erkens received various research awards, including the AICPA-CIMA Best Early Career Researcher Award in 2013 and several best paper awards from academic conferences. He serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Management Accounting Research and is a member of the American Accounting Association.

Erkens has taught various management accounting courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. He earned his MS.c. in International Management from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, and Ph.D. in Business Administration from Arizona State University. Prior to joining Georgetown University in 2017, he served on the faculty of the University of Southern California for nine years.
